Being mommy means so many things... here is just MY little list of what
"Being mommy" means
Being mommy means
- that the diaper bag has everything for any situation from diapers to jumper cables and everything in between
- In stead of carring around that cute coach clutch you got last year , you now carry around a bag big enough to be an airplane carryon.
- your ipod isnt just filled with your favorite tunes, it now has a category of baby lullabies and soothing sounds along with some classical music.
- your child owns more shoes then you do( i never thought that was possible)
- You would rather spend money on an outfit or toy for your child then treating yourself to a manicure or a new bra that you desperately need.
- You cry more then your child when they get shots or hurt themselves
- You have more numbers in your phonebook that are for your child then you have of your own friends and family.
- You have gone more then 3 days without a shower, and you dont really care.
- You now look up the newest cool baby product instead of looking up the newest fashion trends.
- You get excited when you get a coupon in the mail for $3 off a pack of pampers.
- You stopped buying your own lotion and started using the babies because well hey it smells good and you have lots of it!
- You have tasted every baby food, even the apples and ham dinner, because well...just because.
- You have at least once had puke in your mouth that wasnt yours..
- You love your little one unconditionally and cant even remember what life was like before they entered the world.
This is my list of what being a mother means to me.
Emery is my world, she is everything i have ever wanted.. She is my hero

My little fighter
Emery has proven from the moment she entered this world that she was a litle fighter (gets that from her daddie)
Yesterday she had a bad fever, and i got her into see the doctor today..
she has an infection her cheeks are red and puffy and so are her eyes. She has fluid in her ears and a tiny bit in her lungs. We were given Amoxicillin and while we were there they bumped up our zantac (yay). The dr seemed a little concerened stating that if things progressed to bring her in tomorrow that way she can be evaluated further.
I hate not being able to just make her better, i cant feel her pain, all i can feel is the heat radiating off of her from the high fever. I am sitting in the living room bouncing her in her bouncer while she sleeps (her favorite way to fall asleep)
She is trully my inspiration, my little hero. I never knew that the biggest most inspiring thing in my life would be a 3 lb 12 oz little girl.
I hope she recovers quickly , because although i know she could handle another hospital stay
Im just not sure if i could. Im not as strong as her.

Awake
I am up
Wide awake
because Emery has a fever of 101.6
It is always scary when something is wrong with your child no matter there age, i remember being 16 with pink eye in both eyes, and my mom bringing me home anything to make it better and my dad staying home from his odd jobs to be with me..
When Emery shows any signs of illness i immediately go in to panic mode!
Whats wrong? how? why? when? what do i do?
I read all these books about the ages and what constitutes as a fever
But, do i go by corrected or actual for temperature, or do i meet somewhere in the middle
There is no book that comes with having a preemie, no one to tell you exactly what to do in a particular situation..
Sometimes i feel a tremendous amount of guilt over having her so early, I even have dreams or well nightmares about it..Why was my body incapable of holding her for 40 weeks? Why didn't i just go to the doctors even when they told me i wasn't in labor and i just KNEW i was ?
WHY WHY WHY?
I have so many questions and no answers, i suppose i will never get the answers.
But maybe that is what God wants..
He wanted to show us a miracle in the shape of a 3lb baby girl.
So now i am up cherishing my miracle, wondering , worrying.. about everything.
I hope this fever breaks and that we dont need to do another hospital stay
I don't think J or I could handle another hospital stay.. and i dont want to see emery hooked up to a monitor for a long long time.

BIG
Friday the nurse came
16 lbs 7 oz
I was shocked! Somehow overnight my little preemie has turned into this
Vibrant, Happy, Gorgeous, TINY TODDLER
The nurse gave me some amazing news, news that i always dread at these appointments
Emery is on track with her actual age, actually even a little advanced. Were not even going by
her corrected age anymore except for the growth charts. What mom wouldnt want to hear that!
We have bumped up her solids, but i have to be really careful because the reflux has gotten worse so i have to be careful what i give her and the acidity content so no more carrots sorry Emmie i know those are your favorite.
Emery has been very lovey lately, smiling at us whenever she sees us! Cuddling with us whenever we pick her up, the other morning Emmie and I were laying in bed napping and she looked up at me and there was SO much love in her eyes. She can't speak but with just that look i could tell she was saying. Mom, I love you! It made me cry , but i snapped a picture before that its the one at the top of the page, because for some strange reason i cant get pictures to go at the bottom or the middle URGH!
We also bought a new car YAY! 07 chrsyler sebring its beautiful and luxurious, im very happy that it wont be such a struggle to put Emery in the car!
Okay well that is all for this post, hopefully some more interesting stuff happens soon so i can stop boring you all !

update
Sorry i am a little behind! Emery's nicu reunion was on saturday, it went great! I got to see so many people we havent seen in a while even some babies that came in right before we were about to leave. The only nurse we didn't get to see was Nicole, Emerys primary. She works night shifts so its kinda hard to come to day functions.
In other news. J may not be deployed!!! I cant explain how great that is. I dont want to jinx myself though because WHO KNOWS!
Anyways the deployment was supposed to be in january for 12-13 months. But they pushed it back to May 2010, and J is supposed to get out in June 2011 and techincally you have to be back stateside 90 days before your day out.. so he is undeployable. But they could decide to make him go 6 months.. So , i guess i shouldnt get my hopes up.
Tomorrow Emerys nurse comes to check on her and see how she is doing, I am excited because last time she came Emery was super closed to rolling but not quite there. So I am sure Sam will be excited to see how well she is doing now!
So time to guess Emerys weight.. she was 14 lbs 9 oz last month. Im really not sure how this is gonna go Im thinking she is 15 lbs 6 oz or so but she feels Heavier I just dont know!
It's almost time to upgrade to a new car seat, im looking at the Graco my ride 65, the britax are nice but they are so darn expensive. And the Graco actually looks awesome! Anyone have that one any suggestions!
Also were going car shopping this weekend , we NEED a 4 door. So saturday were going to test drive the Kia Soul Im pretty pumped!

HOLY ROLLER
Emery has been super close to rolling for the past 2 weeks.. She learned how to roll from tummy to back rather quickly since she hated tummy time. But , never even attempted to roll from back to tummy until the past couple weeks. Aparently It all just clicked this week. She rolled for the first time and hasnt stopped since then. And now she is like super close to crawling. Where did my little girl go! Man i thought i still had some time to baby proof apparently not!!! I need to get on that.
On another note, Today is beautiful, One of those days that i wish i had a back yard or at least a patio/balcony. I wish i could just sit on the balcony with Emery in her bouncer and enjoy the fresh air.
Emerys reflux has gotten worse, its evident as of lately the back arching, the clawing at the bottle, and the hiccups are all happening again :-( . Guess i need to call the ped, hopefully its just a simple up the dosage type thing. I really dont want to try any other medicines.

snocones
Yesterday was J's Military Family Fun day... It was mandatory
I never thought i would here mandatory and fun in the same sentence, but well its the military ha ha. Anyways it was fun, free food and raffles! The best part was... They had a snowcone machine, so J got us both a snocone , Emery decided she wanted some so we let her she was opening her mouth so wide and just shoving the ice in her mouth, she was loving it. We would take it away and she would start crying , im guessing it felt great on her teething gums. I never thought i would see a baby gum a snocone to death ahaha it ended up all over her but it was fun! And we took her in the pool, this time i got well a couple pictures. Then i decided i should teach Emery to stick out her tounge , it took a couple trys but she got it , damn proud over here. Next saturday is the NICU reunion, im excited... I think. Here are some pictures from yesterday!

Emery is
A daddies girl! J comes home for lunch everyday and plays with Emery the whole time he is home. So the moment he leaves she gets whiny lol. I have to share some pictures, everytime j and emery are playing i pull out the camera and snap snap away. He always gets the BIGGEST smiles out of her. I get smiles too but i think she gets sick of seeing me all day lol. Here are some pictures i took yesterday.. amazing. I must admit im a little jealous at times!
Thought i would share.
Thought i would share with you all this

New things
So now I am all caught up on this new blog, still learning the ropes so forgive me all!
Anyways, Emery still isnt rolling we are trying to teach her by putting her favorite toy next to her, but she just cries and archs her back and i feel so bad i give in immediatly lol. She also is teething really badly so she has been a whole lot more fussy then normal which sucks, my usual smiley baby girl is sad and fussy. On to other things, Yesterday i went to the bank with Emery i have horrible horrible anxiety at the bank i dont know why i just do. I feel like everyone is staring at me not to mention that our bank has horrible lines. I am usually there on average for 45 minutes waiting in line its crazy. Well after the bank i wandered around with Emery to some other stores , Sallys beauty , the dollar store before returning to our car. I have a 2 door car so i have to get in the back seat to put emery back into her carseat, WHICH SUCKS, i cant wait to get a 4 door. Anyways as im in the back of the car putting Emery into her carseat the guy next to me gets into his car and HITS MY CAR WITH HIS DOOR, HARD! He looks right at me in the car and then looks away. So i get out, and say "You could at least say your sorry" he says "for what" Um hitting my car with your door he replies "Oh i didnt notice" I reply with yea im sure you didnt! And he sped away JACKASS! I wouldnt have been mad if he would have just apologized but nope. Wow i just got a strange craving for motza ball soup, strange. No im not pregnant again. Anyways still no word on j's deployment date yet, i heard that usually they start all the predeployment stuff 4-6 months before , so i guess if we are right about january then the paperwork will start this summer. Ill let you know more when i know more.
not so chipper

Today i am sad.. I miss my family back in Ohio, my dad left me the most amazing voicemail this morning.. Made me miss my parents so much. I hate the fact that I cant see them as much as I'd like and that Emery cant be around her cousins. My brother is moving back to Ohio, after living with his wife and son in tennesee for the last 7 years.. Im jealous, so so jealous. Everyone will now be back together with the exception of me j and emery. I havent seen my brother in almost 2 years. He hasnt met his newest neice yet, and it makes me depressed. This blog is short because i dont have much else to say i promise a nice chipper blog to follow shortly.

Well we found out that Jeremy aka J my husband will be deploying its 99.9% we just do not know the date yet.. pretty sure its january but not positive. The deployment is 13months long. UGH.. Were hoping that since he is a very valuable person, he made a database for his company that they use on a daily basis and no one else knows how to maintain it, That they will only keep him deployed for 6 months, but thats hoping! Either way, it sucks. Afghanistan SUCKS.. Anyways i thought i would post a couple pictures, from the other day of him and Emery i love them , he is such an amazing husband and father, And he's my best friend.. I have no idea what i am going to do without him for that long, For the last 5 years he has been by my side.. The longest we have been apart was 4 months .. while he was in bootcamp, then i saw him once or twice over the next 3 months of training and then we got stationed.. Here are some pictures! SORRY THEY ARE SO BIG LOL

San diego to LA, and back again...
So i went to an LA Celebrity mommies dinner event tonight well uh last night i guess since is almost 2 am..It was interesting...It was fun, got to see a lot of awesome baby products.. totally want an orbit system lol (as if i could EVER afford that) Really awesome futuristic looking highchairs , Lots of cool stuff.. Pluss i met Ali Larter, Molly ringwald. The mom from my wife and kids.. and lots of other awesome people. Some were extremely rude, some were polite. Left with a gift bag full of stuff. and a bumble bag diaper bag. SWEET! we all got to leave with one of the showcase products, unfortunatly my number was called almost very last , so i didnt have much to pick from the orbit was gone, the awesome highchairs were gone.. But i needed a new diaper bag since the unfortunate event of my cat and my diaper bag... yea.. he peed in it, and well i had to throw it out after that... So I ended up leaving with something Useful which is great! The drive to LA from San Diego was ugkoasduoaejsdghosa to say the least i have horrible driving anxiety and well.. lets just say not a trip i will take often. I am definitly more fond of San Diego.
Now im home , and Emery keeps waking up and coughing, which worries me, last time she had a cough she had to go to the hospital, so i gotta keep a close eye on that, hopefully, it s nothing. that would be great. Ill upload some new pictures tomorrow, i didnt take any at the even cuz it was so HECTIC no joke.. great plan poorly executed. Anyways im off.. takin care of my angel!

We took Emery swimming for the first time in the pool i have no pictures because i was enjoying it to much to grab the camera. She was kicking those little legs it was so cute.. We even had her kicking and we would pass her back and forth like she was swimming by herself to us and she would smile... She kept trying to put her head under though lol she does that in the bathtub too! It was a good tempature but still to cold to keep her in for very long. We stayed in for about 30 minutes before some inconsiderate a$$holes pardon my french let their kids jump in and do cannon balls right by us in the SHALLOW END with an infant. nice huh, that california for you! Needless to say it was a blast, the ocean is still to cold to take her in but hopefully soon! Anyways were off to church! Post more later!

was just thinking about this the other day, I was thinking about the days that emery was in the nicu, although that was a hard time sometimes i stop to think about it to put myself in check and remind myself to be thankful for the things i have in life. So anyways i was thinking about the one thing that bothered my most about her being in the NICU. When i was pregnant people could see i was pregnant they could see i was about to have a baby and they would smile, i always thought when i had my baby and took her out i would get the same reactions. Then i found myself running errands while emery was in the nicu, no tummy, no baby.. no evidence that i was a mother besides my shopping cart full of preemie onsies, baby girl colored blankets.. im sure people thought i was buying as a gift. I remember trying to bring up how much i missed her while out shopping in hopes that someone may hear and realize i wasnt childless. I was jealous when i saw new moms out with there babies or even pregnant women. I remember being in walmart in tears because it wasnt fair that other women could have their babies and leave the hospital with them, i even remember saying they are buying newborn diapers i will never get to do that illl have to skip straight to size 1.. it was stupid and petty of me to be this upset over such a dumb thing but i was. I wanted to be a mother so so BADLY, and now i was but no one knew. I remember walking back into my math class on campus 2 days after i had the baby, i didnt talk to realy anyone in this class but they all saw me with a belly just a few days before and now, no belly. NOT ONE PERSON SAID A THING TO ME. Im not sure why they all knew i wasnt due until after the semester. But no one said a word. This made me even more upset. They just looked at me and when i would notice they would give me that apethetic smile.. but they had no idea what happend. I wanted to scream
" I AM A NEW MOM MY DAUGHTER IS TINY AND BEAUTIFUL!! " The reason i bring this up is because you never know what someone is going through and sometimes it is worse to not ask at all. Our nicu reunion is next month and im very excited to see everyone. I am excited to hear everyones stories. I am excited to show off my beautiful, happy, miracle baby girl. I hope these memories never fade..

So , the 6 month stranger anxiety has made its self known. Yay (not the sarcasm) lol Emery has always been very cool with other people holding her loving on her she loves the attention, on friday that at home nurse told me that i should expect her to start having stranger anxiety, i was like NO NO WAY, SHE IS GREAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE, she even said, trust me it will come out of no where. So 10 min after she left i took emery with me to check our mailbox, we stopped in to our rental office to say hi to the ladies are usual thing, and i handed her off to beatrice, and Emery started screaming, i was like WHAT!!!!!!!! (of course she has to prove me wrong haha) As soon as she handed her back to me she stopped i was seriously stunned lol. Then yesterday at church my nursery number came up so i had to go down their and pick her up halfway through the sermon because she was crying as soon as i picked her up she was laughing and smiling little faker lol.
So im sure this has happend to other moms but i feel so stupid for doing this, So being busy and well i dunno i dont really have an excuse for my ignorance, i realized Emery's zantac was getting low and that i needed to call her dr to put in a nother prescription for her for it. Well um, i didnt, until today and we have been out for like 2 days. I feel horrible. So now i have to wait for her dr to call me back and then for the naval pharmacy to fill it which who knows how long that will take and then i have to drive 30 minutes to go pick it up..urgh ignorance on my part lol.
So if you know me you know i looooove taking pictures of emery , my hubby got me an awesome kodak touch screen 10mp camera for xmas. I take pictures everyday of her and out of nowhere sat i turn it on and it will not focus you can hear it trying to focus but it wont i was SOOO MAD!! We suck at keeping receipts so i didnt have it anymore and that is the only way kodak would send us another one so i went straight to the source walmart where we bought it. They were so awesome they let me exchange it but they were all out of the model i bought, so i ended up exchanging it for another one that was the same price, another kodak but its EVEN BETTER 12mp HELL YEA! i was pretty pumped that they let us do that , they were kinda leary since we bought it almost 6 months ago but after they looked at it and realized there wasnt a scratch or even a little knick on it they were cool. (soo sooo awesome)
Here are some pix i took with my new camera today still learning all of its cool features..
Here you go, better post to come later!

Today our at home nurse came to visit, we have a new one, and she is awesome!!! She stayed for 2 hours, she wanted to hear all about emery, we talked about everything she could and couldnt do and put her on a chart and she is right on track with a fullterm 6 monther!!! I was so excited to hear that, she is a little behind on her fine motor skills like picking stuff up, reaching for stuff but still at 6 month level. Awesome since she is technically only 4 months and 4 days old.. even though she is 6 months and 14 days lol.. She is 14 lbs 9 1/2 oz and 25 1/2 inches. The hubby came home for lunch when the nurse was here and the nurse was so surprised by how great they interact together, j walked right over to emery and start playing with her like he always does. When he left she was like "wow you dont see many dads, that play with their baby espeically when they are so young" She commented on how awesome we were doing , and how surprised she was that i have my head on straight and how mature i was. It was a refreshing conversation for sure. i still can not comment on the issue i was refering to in the post before this, but i promise i will soon, it isnt about us or anything so dont worry. I am taking tae kwon doe this summer im so pumped i took yoga this last semester and just finished that this week it was a blast. So im very excited to do tae kown doe, you lose weight so hey why not.. ah thats my cue emery is fussing time for some pureed peaches lol im off,

Today is one hell of a happy day, Today Emery turned 6 months old, Something we were unsure would even come her first few days in the NICU. I look at her on a daily basis and i thank god, but today i reflect, not just on her story but also on me and my husbands story. I remember her first ultrasound, her heartbeat, the first time i felt her kick, or have hiccups inside me, i remember feeling her kick me when she didnt like the way i was laying or feeling her move more when i ate certain foods.. I remember sitting on the couch while j told stories to her, about how we met, and how much we loved her. All i wanted was for her to be healthy and happy, i never thought i would have her 10 weeks early. I remember getting jealous when i heard of my friends who had healthy full term babies. I remember my husbands reaction when he found out we were having the baby that day, all he could say was "She will be fine hunny she is a perfect mix of you and me, she is stubborn like her mommy, she is a fighter like her daddy, and you better believe, that a little girl with those qualities isnt gonna give up" When she was born she never needed oxygen, it ASTONISHED the doctors, they even did 3 different tests to see if maybe they were wrong about her gestation but she was only 29 weeks 5 days. Now she is 6 months old, and has only had one brief hospital stay since her 7 week nicu stay. I look at her and i see more wisdom in her then i do in some adults, she can read my face when im upset she smiles and coos, when im tired she will take a nap so that i can, she knows me so well, when im depressed and i pick her up she will hug me tight and rest her head on my shoulder, something she rarely does since she found out how to lift her head up and look all around . Today i thank god, my family, my friends, everyone in this community, For being there for us, for helping us in our hard times and being there for the great ones as well. We our trully blessed to have all of you in our lives.
Happy 6 months LiL miss emery, you have touched so many peoples hearts, you are our little miracle. We love you!

Her parents have so much strength, i almost wish i would have walked in LA just to hear her mothers beautiful speach, she posted it in her blog , if you would like to read it..

The walk was wonderful, and of course miss emery turned on her charm for everyone and anyone, we got a special tu tu and onsie made for her and she looked way cute.
The walk was amazing and i cant wait to do it again next year , although i was kinda bummed that i didnt get a t-shirt because we were 30 dollars shy of 250 ...
I hope you all had fun at your walks to, next year i'll be sure to make my own cool team tshirt!

Yesterday Emery had her 6 month check up, j and i were starting to become more and more concerened with Emery's gas problem lately, Emery always has gas , yes i know all babies do but hers is horrible, she will scream from it and oh i just feel so bad, we have to give her gas drops after every bottle, and if we didnt give those it would be SOOO much worse. She always spits up too, after every bottle, we have changed her formula numerous times, we cant give her the special preemie formula because its way to hard on her tummy. She is on gasease formula and it helps but its still bad...
Anyways we brought the gas up to Dr. Piccone the best doctor ever, and he was a little concerened that at 6 months she still had bad gas, but then when we brought up the spitting up he decided that she needs to try zantac. yes the heartburn medicine.. In the NICU they thought she may have GERD, its gastro reflux disease, now im pretty sure she does. Dr. piccone told us it may be up to a week before we saw a difference but no joke after the first dose i noticed a difference it was the very first time i had fed her and she didnt spit up.. then the gas she had was super minimal. When i gave her the 2nd dose same thing NO SPIT UP.. I WAS SOO EXCITED and i still am. I cant explain how good it feels to know she isnt in agony and to not have to worry about her spitting up after each feeding. I am so glad that we have such a great doctor, considering we have military insurance and we have to be seen at the naval hospital its rare to get a really awesome doctor. We met him when Emery had to go back to the hospital in january when they thought she had RSV, turned out to be bronchiolitis, Dr. Piccone is the High risk infant pediatrician, until then she had a different doctor that i didnt like because he wasnt the one the nicu wanted us to have. So after that, i started making her appts with him, he is so awesome he remembers her name and he is very sweet and he isnt one of those doctors that just comes in does the check up then RUSHES out of the room, which i love because i cant stand doctors like that. He sits down with us shows us her percentiles for full term babies her age and then preemies her age and so on.. Im just happy , that he decided to try this medicine..
anyways, then while we were waiting in the pharmacy for her medicine, our pharmacy is in the hospital, it often reminds me of a meat counter you take a ticket and then you sit there and wait for your number its like bingo.. they have 12 counters all calling different numbers.. Your like YES MY TICKET IS UP!!!!! so iin the pharmacy another woman and her husband sit next to us with their baby who is the same size as emery. She leans over looks at emery asleep in her car seat and says aw shes 4 months right.. I say no, shes 6 mo her eyes looked like they were going to bulge out of her head, which made me laugh.. Wow she is, um, just smaller then my son Then i say ya well she is preemie so yep she is a bit smaller! oohh.. Then our number was called and she didnt have time to sprout into her 21 questions that im absolutely sure she had.. lol i dont mind answering peoples questions, but sometimes i just dont want to, espeically when my anxiety is kicking in , in a pharmacy filled with 60 people all within ear shot from you telling your story.. no thanks not interested..
Anyways i will leave you with a few pictures, from the beach the other day , Emery and I went with her nicu roomate, MARK.. he is 5 days older then her and he was born at about 31 weeks, but was the same weight as Emery was, and they were in the same room together and she was always just a couple days behind him, even getting discharged, His mother and i have become extremely close and we get together alot .. so here our some pictures of Emery and her nicu friend Mark..

Age aint nothin but a number

and mine is just a bit lower then mosts..
Topic of today is age, some of you may know some of you may not.. I am a young mommy. I am 20 I had Emery when i was 19, but and this is a big but, I have been married for almost 2 years, been with my husband for 5 years total and she was PLANNED.
I am saying this because, the minute people see me with a baby besides asking how old she is they feel the need to ask my age, they say wow YOUR SOOOO YOUNG! Most of the time i reply with YES I am! I get very angry about this because, most people assume my daughter was an "accident". and nope she wasnt , my husband is 24 and we both wanted children young. We knew we were getting married so i stopped taking birth control, it took us 8 months to get pregnant, i even got a book "The everything on getting pregnant book" great book actually. So i just get a little testy when people just assume this. You wouldnt believe some of the looks i get from people in stores, my husband laughs because he thinks its funny that I am a better mother then a lot of people , and my age has nothing to do with how well i can be a parent.
We have no family in California, they all live in Ohio, so my daughter is not being raised by anyone but me and my husband.
I love some of the questions i get from people "why would you want a child so young" my response, Why would you wait? that usually shuts them up or they respond with we wanted to be ready finacially, when they say that i say Well i am financially stable.
Another one i get alot is " You must be having such a difficult time?" Um are you saying this because I have an infant or because of my age. My response is, well actually i think most people with an baby would say it isnt easy..
Oh here is another good one " What about your education?" believe it or not guys IM STILL IN COLLEGE , i do online classes, and i take a class 2x a week at the campus after my husband gets home from work.
When i was pregnant my doctor kept using the term "Teen pregnancy" because i was 19 that always made my husband laugh, Im actually surprised he never went off on her, it took everything in me to not be a huge bitch to her, although J would tell you i was lol..
Anyways, the point of this story is I am an amazing mother anyone would tell you this, and it has nothing to do with how old I am. So next time you see a young mother think twice about the looks you shoot her, or the snide remarks you say to your teenage kids and husband.. It just makes me grateful for having the amazing parents I had.
Plus, When Emery see's me her love for me doesnt change because I am young she loves me because I love her with my whole heart, and I am giving her an amazing life. Her dad fights for her freedom and we couldnt love our little girl more!

We decided since it was a beautiful day in oceanside california yesterday that we would head to the beach. Which by the way is a whole different ball game when you have a small baby, last summer we would grab our 2 beach chairs 2 towels and be on our way.. yesterday though i had to grab stuff for emery to play with, our beach chairs, her diaper bag filled with everything, formula, hot water, another onesie, a hoody just in case the wind got to be too much, sun screen, diapers, a rattle, an extra pacifier damn the sand, changing pad , and baby food... seriously that was just one bag.. then i grabbed a book bag and put towels and blankets in there.. it was an ordeal.. then we realized.. SHIT we dont have a beach umbrella... which now i will be investing in.. how are we going to keep emery in the shade, my husband had the brilliant idea of using a normal umbrella. Desperate for sun i aggreed, it would get the job done..
Wooo hoo success we propped up are umbrella then covered it with our beach towels to make it lighter in color cuz it was black. laid a blanket undernieth it and watch emery lay on the beach.. We got a couple laughs from people about our makeshift beach umbrella, but i dont care everyone is broke right now, and i can not afford to spend 35 bucks for a beach umbrella lol..
I was stupid, after being so admit about bathing Emery in her 70spf sunscreen i didnt put any on myself... now my knees and thighs are burnt along with my face my entire back .. and ugh .. i guess i should take my own advice next time...

I was watching Emery play today, it made me tear up a little bit. I watched her bring her hands together swat at the toys on her play mat, laugh when i made faces at her in her play mat mirror.
All these things the doctors and nurses told me that she most likely wouldnt do on time, she is doing.
As i watched her swat at a multi colored crinkly paper parrot, i started to reflect back on the days of her in the nicu.
I remember that everytime something good would happen, the nurses and doctors would follow it up with "but dont get to excited, with every step forward, they can take 3 steps back."
Why do i still feel this way, its like im still preparing myself for a new setback. I shouldnt feel this way, i know i shouldnt. I just do though.
I sometimes get mad at my friends who have a child the same age as emery but they were born full term when they say stuff to me like, Oh emery isnt doing that yet... etc.
Or the awesome comment i got from someone in the grocery store last month, they said something like aw how old is she i replied 5 months, they came back with "oh wow really, whats wrong with her"..
I replied "um excuse me" then she fired back with
"oh well she is just really little, my son was bigger then that when he was a newborn, is she sickly...."
I replied with.. "wow your son must really be a fat ass now, and walked away" probably not the nicest thing i could have said, but.. i was just so taken back by her snide comments.. First off emery isnt that little shes 13lbs and 24inches... thats a little underweight for her age but nothing MONUMENTAL. I didnt even feel like she had the right to know that emery was born premature and that is why she is so little THANK U VERY MUCH!..
I then proceeded to tell emery that she was beautiful, and smart and she is our miracle.
I know she couldnt understand but she just looked at me with her big Gummy grin as if to say, " aw ma dont sweat it" it made me feel better..
I am now going to go play with my little girl , and smile about how amazing my little preemie is doing!

RIP Maddie!
Many of you have heard about Madeline Alice Sphor who passed away on april 7th. I started reading her mothers blog just before Madeline passed away, as i read her blog i found so much in common with my daughter and little madeline they were both born 11 weeks eary, both heather and i had to have our daughters at different hospitals then we were at. My heart weeps for her family. It made me hug Emery so much closer to me, i played with her for 5 hours straight until she was literally so tired she couldnt keep her eyes open. Madeline is an inspiration, and i feel like her story will finally open peoples eyes to the issue of premature births. There is not much else i can say except i know that there is one beautiful little angel in heaven watching over her family and all little preemie babies.

Im sorry its been so long since i posted, I hadnt realized i havent posted in 4 months .. So sorry. Anyways recap. In january emery had a brief stay back in the hospital. My husband was on duty and i got up for emerys 4 am feeding and heard a bit of wheezing. I was instantly worried. I had been sick so i felt very guilty that she had caught whatever I had. I took her to the ER , after hours of waiting in the ER, and her x rays. She was finally admitted into peds clinic. She was quarantined incase she had RSV which they thought she did but the test takes days to get back. The final diagnoses was bronchiolitis and whooping cough she had to do breathing treatments in the hospital for 3 days and then came home. I cried when they hooked her up to the monitors again it was like, ugh THIS AGAIN! She had a bad cough for a few days. Then it went away. The doctors said that i was smart for bringing her in so fast, because it could have gotten really bad really fast.
In february,Emery started to have colic, it was horrible she couldnt fall asleep unless she was in a bouncer or swing something in motion. We bought the most amazing thing though COLIC CALM.. it is completely homeopathic gripe water it has charcoal in it so it absorbs the gas. That stuff was a miracle, within a few minutes of giving it to her she would relax sometimes release a bowel movement and fall asleep. At the end of the month we went to ohio to visit the family, It was awesome I was so preparing for a horrible plane ride of a baby screaming, especially since she had collic. We decided to have a lay over to make things easier. So each plane ride was about 2 1/2 hours long. She was amazing she slept through both plane rides. Everyone was giving us compliments on how well she behaved. Being home was awesome it was the first time my dad met her because my mom came and saw her after i gave birth. Also, the first time j's parents had met her. Ill of my nephews and nieces were so excited to have another cousin even asia who was the baby but is now 6. We stayed at my parents house and it was so funny, everytime we would leave the house my mom would be like "do you have an extra pacifier, and diapers... etc" i had to remind her that ive been a mom for the past 4 months without her help. It was sweet. My dad would watch her so we could go out and have fun. Since he does free lance work he doesnt have a set time to be up unlike my mom , so he would sleep out on the couch with her, it was the sweetest thing. They immidiatly bonded. Right towards the end of the trip Emery started sleeping through the night which was amazing although we knew it wouldnt last when we would go back home, the time zone would screw everything up. lol
In march, I found out emery weighed 13 lbs WOW, oh and i got the whole 17,500 helicopter bill taken care of.. big load off my chest.. No way could i afford that, the insurance should have covered it, but since the idiot who kept trying to call me while emery was in the nicu never ever answered when i called her back. They billed me. Honestly, my daughter was just born and is in the nicu which i had no service in, and this heliport medical transport team is calling me 3 x a day to get my insurance info which is just my husbands social since im military . I called back everyday and said "Listen, im military you must know this since you picked my daughter up from ONE NAVAL HOSPITAL, AND DROPPED HER OFF AT ANOTHER" My husbands social is our insurance policy number and i am not leaving that on your voicemail, so call me back, and then they never would. When i explained this to the lady trying to get it all figured out she got all bitchy with me explaing well what do you think she would do with his social. I responded with " i dont know, but in this day and age your an idiot if you think im leaving my husbands full name birthdate and social on your machine. She then told me well its taken care of , and hung up on me. NICE.
We started going to church back in january, its called NORTH COAST CHURCH, probably the most awesome church ever look it up , its really cool totaly laid back live rock music and services at all different times with child care. They always tell us how much they adore Emery. Although the last sunday in march i got pretty pissed at them. I dropped emery off like i always do with her diaper bag, well aparently they couldnt find the diapers in the bag which , were in the zip pouch in the center pocker where they always are so they put her in a newborn diaper when they changed her mind you she is in size 2 actually about to wear size 3 that babies got back. When we got home from church she was whining im like well they just fed you your not hungry. i tried to hold her and she just kept crying. I didnt bother to check the diaper because they told me they had just changed it, and emery isnt one to cry for no reason. Finally about 20 min later i was changing her into pj's and i realize why she was crying. It was so tight it had cut into her thighs and tummy. I felt so horrible i started to cry. I was so mad. I got over it pretty fast, but i was still upset. I kinda snapped at them the next week proceeding to tell them 3 times where her diapers were.
That brings us to now,
well emery is now cracking up laughing when we do silly things. I love it , it makes me see that she is on the right developmental track. She absolutely loves to stand were pretty sure that she will walk before she crawls, since she absolutely hates being on her belly for more then 5 minutes. She will be 6 months old at the end of this month and its crazy how fast the time went by. I look at pictures of her from weeks and months ago and its astonishing. Were getting excited for our MOD walk , on april 25th her in san diego. If you would like to donate to team emery it would be so appreciated, i even have 1 dollar donations on there, So you can show your support without going broke. We all know how tough the times are but its so important so here is the link for our team. Any size donation is greatly appreciated.

Ill enclose a few newer pics of Emery for all of you. And i promise i will post at least once a week from now on hahaha.

Getting Adjusted

Emery had her first weight check which i think i covered in the last one. So she was 6lbs 3 oz as of 2 days after she was discharged so the 15th of december. So, gosh these blogs will become easier once im caught up with the current so anyways here it goes im just gonna say it all. So the first week home was pretty chill she wasnt crying much because shes still not even supposed to be here so she was pretty quiet. Everyone just says were so lucky, but i knew it was coming. So a week from her 1st weigh in we had her 2 month well baby visit although techincally shes 2 months today they just didnt want me to have to come in again in a few days so they did it last monday when she needed her 3rd dose of Synagis (RSV vaccination) So i wish we would have known that they were gonna do her 2 month well baby check up because i would have given her baby tylenol before, She got so many shots, and the Hep b one i know makes her sick, She got a small fever from the shots, so once we got home i gave her barely any tylenol i think it was .04 ml lol, because on the bottle they didnt even have how much to give for babies under 12 pounds lol. so i just did some math in my head and came to the conclusion that that was about right. It helped her alot, her fever went down and she slept for a few hours and got some good rest. Thank the lord for baby tylenol. Also at her last appt she weighed 7lbs 5oz, wow, so im sure shes about 8 as of today but i dont have a scale, for my own personal reasons lol. I was shocked that shes putting on weight so good, the doctor was so pleased that they dont even need to see Emery again until her 4 month well baby check up. I was pretty happy to hear that, since im just well REALLY REALLY SICK OF HOSPITALS.
Christmas went great, since she really doesnt understand it we just put most of her little gifts in her stocking, by the way you can get alot of AWESOME baby stuff at the dollar stores. We got a baby bathing suit for her, a cap and mitten set, wipes, a cleveland Cavaliers bib (GO CAVS!!!) A blanket thats really cute and couple other things. The dollar store is an awesome place especially with the economy the way it is. I even picked up my thank you cards from there.
Anyways, since we didnt go out of town it was just us three celebrating christmas we made ham, and green bean casserole and yams and a bunch of other stuff. It was great, unfortunatly i can not stand leftovers, so the leftovers kinda went to waste
So now that kinda brings us to today, well the last couple of nights, emery has absolutely refused to sleep in her bassinet in our bedroom, she loves the bassinet that is in our living room, its attatched to the pack n play, but thats to big to put in our room. So shes been sleeping in our bed with us. She usually sleeps on our chests or i put her right next to me, If anyone is scared to do this because your worried you will roll over on them, trust me your instincts kick in and you just know they are there, but i also have these little triangle blocks that keep her from rolling, and me from rolling into her there neat. There pretty cheap too, our was secondhand. Once upon a child, is a great place to get secondhand stuff for good price. Anyways so now were trying to transition her to her own bedroom with her nice crib and stuff, but shes not liking it she just screams and cries for no reason i really dont know what to do, so i take her out and my husband says she'll never learn if i spoil her but oh well. Anyways tomorrow is New years Eve so i probably wont write but i will try and fill people in as things happen. Anyways SEE YA NEXT YEAR. Happy New Years guys!!!. And thank you for all of your support. Oh yea im going to enclose a picture of Emery along with my friends baby AlabamaRose Marie, Alabama is only 5 days older then Emery wait until you see there size difference because of Emery being premature, I just took the picture 2 days ago.

My teacher understood, i ran in turned in my revisions and then hopped on the road. My emotions were running higher then they were the first time i entered the nicu, there were so many things running through my head, How will the 40 mile car ride be for her, What if she stops breathing at home, how will i know if she gets RSV, Will i be a good mom? The nurses reassured me that these were all reasonable feelings. I sat in the back seat with her on the way home, i really recommend this, her poor little head was shaking from all the bumps i felt horrible but she just kept sleeping. The first day home was interesting it was like okay how should we do this.. i must say shes a very good baby she rarely cries. I must tell anyone who is pregnant or has an infant. PACK N PLAYS are amazing. My brother bought us one that has a changing table attachment along with a bassinet part with a mobile and it plays music and everything. This is what she stays in 90% of the time , this is in the living room. She has a nice big crib in her room but it will be a few months before i feel comfortable not having her by me . She also has a bassinet in our bedroom for night time.
She wakes up about every 2 to 3 hours to eat sometimes 4 at the very most. She eats anywhere from 60 ml to 125ml.. so 2 to 4 oz. I was so hell bent on mass breast feeding when i got her home, but it didnt happen she was so used to the bottles that latching on frustrated her and she would cry and cry and then fall asleep. I needed her to eat so now i do both again. I have this nipple shield which you can get from babies r us even wal mart it really helps to latch on , thank god for that or i dont think i could breast feed at all. Ive been pumping and giving formula, but i really dont know how much longer i can pump. my supply is dwindling , and i am sad about it but the way i see it is , at least i did it, at least i gave her what i could. and i ll still continue to give her what i can.
After the baby is home for 2 days they go in for a weight check to make sure they are gaining good. Well this is not a problem for miss emery who was discharged at 5lbs 11 oz on monday 2 days later she was 6lbs 3 oz.. CRAZY!. I was so shocked i made them weigh her again. She even fits in most newborn clothes now.
The first few days home was crazy everyone wanted to see her and of course i was very hesitant we let a few people visit but insisted on them using purell before they touched her and if they had any cough at all they were not coming over. After the first couple nights it got easier, my husband and i switch off on feedings at night. Although i do more since he has to work at 6 am. and i can usually sleep till 8 or 9. Her feeding schedule at night is usually every 3 hours, and she usually falls right back asleep after eating but not always. Those nights suck. Now that we have a routine it has become much easier and so rewarding. Everyday i see new things. For example.. she can now hold on to her pacifier, we put it in her hand and she grasps it, 2 days ago she brought it to her mouth UNBELIEVABLE. We were astounded i called my mom she was shocked, Emery didnt just do this one time she did it 6 times in a row. Also we bought one of those mats the baby plays on and it has a mirror and she grabs the mirror and moves it to look at herself from different angles.

The Nicu (Where we lived for 7 weeks)
\
First off Id like to say thanks to everyone who has read my first blog, its very inspiring to know that others have been through what ive been through, and even people who just care. Thank you!
The NICU
The first time i walked in my heart was racing i didnt really look around i just wanted to see Emery. I was taken to the "Big room" It was a larger room in the way back of the Nicu which i was later told was where the most critical babies went. I came in, and was told to do a 3 minute scrub with this hot pink soap called HIBICLENS(still not sure on the pronunciation) and a scrub brush.. after 7 weeks of this my husband and i had to invest in some great lotion lol. After i scrubbed i took my first look around the "big room" , there was only one other baby, Mark is what the little blue and white sign on his Girrafe Isolette said. As soon as i arrived, more people surrounded me then i could imagine, My assigned social worker arrived, then a her pediatrician, and then her nurses. The most amazing thing was We had been given a house to live in on the hospital grounds so we didnt have to drive 80 miles everyday to see her. It is called the Fisher House, its sorta like ronald mcdonald house but for military families in times of need. That house was trully a blessing. Anyways. sorry for the side story. At first glance, the nicu is pretty scary, theres oxygen tanks, little oxygen masks, wires everywhere, monitors binging every 5 seconds.. My heart skipped a beat everytime i heard a monitor ring for the entire first week. Emery was very lucky for someone of her gestation, she was never on oxygen, very unusual. Honestly, i dont remember much of the first day because i was to in awe of her. I was shocked that they let me hold her she was so small so fragile we could only hold her for 20 minutes, because preemies can not hold there tempature. The isolette she was in called "The giraffe" is more like a space ship with the push of a button the entire top lifted off, and a heat lamp came out .. It was crazy, i found out the price on those bad boys about 40,000 dollars. Its like a baby beamer. lol.
Im gonna give a rundown of everything in the nicu real fast so that when i use the terms, i dont have to define what they are just incase some of you dont know... All of it was foreign to me at first.
The bili lights- the lights for jaundice, they put a little mask over the babies eyes. ill insert a picture .
A's B's and D's
No not a grading scale, Apnea, Bradycardia and Desat
Apnea is no breathing for a period of time usually about 10 or so seconds. The monitor dings for that.
Bradycardia, is the slowing of the heart, a typical baby heart rate is usually 140s to 160s give or take when they have a bradycardia, the monitor dings if the heart rate dips below 100, emerys lowest was 60.
Desat well im still not really sure on that one , but i know its not good, the monitor bings louder for b's then a's and for d's then b's but they usually all occur because of one another.
Pic line- normal iv's usually have to be replaced daily sometimes hourly, for reasons like veins being blown because there so little, and they pull them out. So a pic line is usually put in the thigh or arm and it goes in deeper and stays in for long amounts of time, to give medicines, nutrients, sugar, anything that would go in an IV. They make you sign for this because theres risk for Sepsis an infection basically.
AOP- apnea of prematurity usually doesnt go away till 34 weeks of gestation . sometimes as late as 42 weeks gestation
Gavage- tube that goes into the nube down the esophagus into the belly for feeding.
This is really all i can think of if i use something else ill remember to explain it.
On day 2 at the nicu the asked me if they could put a PIC line in, after they explained it i signed, she had already pulled 3 iv's out that day and her little veins were blown, they even placed one in her head. ya her head. they had started feeding her through the gavage only 4 ml a feeding which was every 3 hours crazy thats nothing.
Everyday they would increase her food by a little more first it was 4, the next day 6 then 8 then 12 etc. etc. when she was discharged she was on adlib feeds usually taking 60 to 100 ml so about 3 oz or so. every 3 to 4 hours..
All babies usually lose weight after birth emery lost 12 oz. she got down to 3 lbs, and that was scary. They needed her to gain weight so she was on my breast milk fortified with 24 cal human milk fortifier to help weight gain.
Everytime i came into the nicu the nurses and dr's were amazing always updating me with what was new that day. What tests were being done all that.
Most newborns have some jaundice and they get treated with bili lights it sorta looks like there getting a tan. Emery had to have a bili treatment 4 times before her jaundice was resolved. When she was having the treatment they were more strict about us holding her, it sucked but we knew it was for the best.. We could usually only hold her once a shift for about 20 - 30 minutes. I cant explain to you how horrible it felt to go out somewhere and see people with there newborns , getting to be a mom. I remember i kept saying to my husband, Im a mom , and no body would ever know. It made me sad that i couldnt be with her at all times especially since i was in class and my husband had to return to work.
The nicu understands that we can not be there 24/7 and they were always awesome about calling me if anything came up or if i wanted to know how she was i would call them and they would always update me.
about 2 weeks after she was born she was bumped from the "Big room" which now had about 6 occupants to one of the 8 smaller rooms that usually housed 2 babies. she was still in an isolette but i was not as hightech as the giraffe model, this one was smaller, no heat lamp just regular heat, and the top didnt lift off u had to work through 2 holes they only wanted u to open it if you were taking her out. But she was moved to the new room with her buddy mark from the big room they were 5 days apart, same gestational age and same weight and emery was always a few days behind him. She was now eating about 30 a feeding had no iv's just had to take caffeine orally to help lung stimulation. and poly visol a iron supplement vitamin thing orally to. and was still being fed through the gavage. Babies can not suck, swallow and breath all at the same time until about 34 weeks gestational age. They will usually choke. To help with this they let you do non nutritive breast feeding where you pump before and then let her suck and suck . or pacifier sucking.
On Thanksgiving we came in which was about 2 weeks later we came in and she was in an open crib. It was awesome, every step up is a step closer to graduation, and mark had been moved about 4 days prior. The open crib is small not a crib that your used to seeing. That same day they gave her , her first bottle, she choked a couple of times and didnt finsh all 40 ml, but she did pretty good for only being about 32 weeks gestation at that time. They had to give her the rest of that feeding and all the other ones through the gavage, we could only do a bottle or breast feed once a shift. so 2x a day. and the rest were gavage feedings. after she did good on that they let us increase it until she was finally on all bottle or breast feeds, she was eating more then i could pump so they had to start supplementing with formula, which made me really depressed i felt like i wasnt doing enough for her, but the nurses were really supportive telling me how hard it was to keep up production for so long by just pumping. Most women give up after a couple weeks. I continued to pump and give her what i could as they supplemented.
There are about 4 things the babies must have accomplished before getting discharge, and contrary to what people believe they do not have to be a certain weight.
1. They must be on all breast or bottle feeds
2. They must be off caffeine and have no A's B's or D's for 10 days prior to discharge this is called "Apnea watch"
3. They must be able to maintain there own tempature in an open crib.
4. They must be gaining weight.
Although some babies are discharged still on caffeine, and monitors and even sometimes on oxygen this is rare, and usually only occurs if the baby has been in past there original due date and the dr.s feel that he or she should be released.
Once she was on all feeds all we were waiting for was for her to be off caffeine and have no events, she was having 2 to 3 bradys a day, and sometimes a desat. but her AOP (Apnea of prematurity) was resolved. After 2 days of taking all of her feeds orally they took the gavage out. It was amazing.
The dr's were concerened though about a few things with emery, first off she was about 5 weeks old and her cord was still not completely off they thought it was a conditon where the tube from the bladder which goes through the umbilical cord so we recycle there waste when there in the womb did not detatch so urine was still being cycled through after about 2 tests they found out this was not the case which was great, because she was on day 4 of her apnea watch. It had already been started over once, and if she had to have surgery she would have to be in longer.
We still dont know why it stayed on, Its still on to this day a little bump. The other issue was that her crit ( red blood cell count) was really low it was in the low 20's usually this is due to anemia which is why most preemies are on the poly visol and iron forumulas once they are discharged. There crit has to drop low in order for their brain to know to make more but low 20's is really low and sometimes constitues for a blood transfusion. This worried me, i wanted her to have my blood, but they said they would have to do all sorts of tests and if they decided she needed the transfusion they would want to do it the same day. Luckily they decided not to do it.
Can i just explain to you guys for one minute about how much apnea watches suck, everytime you hear a monitor bing you look at the babies, and some bings are false alarms so your thinking omg omg omg, was that real, does this start over now?, why why why? Some moms would be in the room crying because they would be on there 4 or 5th watch. Luckily Emery only had 2 watches before discharge. They told us that we would not have her till her due date which was jan 10th 2009, i said no that is not so i will have her by xmas, lol. Low and behold she was discharged on december 13th. She was 6 weeks old, and 36 weeks gestational age. It was the most amazing thing.
Although, the nicu was scary we had are share off good and bad moments. You will not get along with every nurse, you will not always be happy with something they say, or want you to do. But they have the best interest in heart, and remember you can always chat with your assigned social worker, or assigned nurse practioner about what you would like. For example, we had a nurse that was very rude to me and my husband, they baby cried and she said it was because my husband was holding her, and ripped the baby out of his hands . Now im sorry but this was inappropriate. My husband was in tears he didnt understand what he did wrong. We politely asked our social worker if she would not be assigned to our baby, they asked us for our reason and once we explained she said that is fine, That nurse never had our baby again. We also had an amazing nurse named nicole we asked if she would be the primary meaning that when she worked she would always get emery. They usually rotate. She gladly accepted she loved Emery so much. It made me so happy to have nurses love her as much as we did. On the day of Emerys discharge Nicole gave us a bracelet that had her name on it in sterling silver block letter, with pearls and savorsky pink and purple crystal beads . Small enough for emery but big enough for her to wear till shes about 7. It was so sweet of her.
If i didnt address something in this that you have questions about or would like to know about feel free to ask because im sure i missed some things, everyone has questions, and trust me none of them are stupid. I actually want to become a speaker for the nicu do meetings with parents in the nicu once a week where they can all talk to eachother about there experiences, ask questions. Cry, smile, laugh all of that. I'm not exactly sure how to go about this but im gonna try.
In the next blog, i will talk about her first week home.
Having her off the monitors was more scary then having her on them.
Feel free to ask me questions, or leave comments. If you do not want them to appear, Here is my email Misspaulamaurine@yahoo.com
